Those of us who eat more processed meat such as salami and bacon show an increased risk of stomach cancer, a group of Swedish researchers claims.

The researchers from Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute reviewed 15
international studies on stomach cancer and processed meats including bacon, sausage, hot dogs, salami, and ham. They concluded that the risk of developing stomach cancer increased by between 15 percent and 38 percent when consumption of processed meat increased by 30 grams per day.

“Findings were most consistent for bacon consumption,” the team wrote in a recent issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

If you’re looking to cut down on your consumption of processed meats why not consider some of the following tasty alternatives to try on bread:

  • humus and sweet chili sauce
  • tapenade
  • sardines in tomato sauce (rich in Omega oils for a healthy heart!)
  • grilled vegetables and halloumi

According to the report by Karolinska Institute, Stomach cancer accounts for nearly 10 percent of total deaths from cancer, and about 700,000 deaths from stomach cancer occur every year worldwide.
