A, B, AB, O. No these are not the grades I got last semester at college. These are the types of blood that the Canadian Blood Service and American Red Cross are looking for.
Save a Life
One liter of blood can help save one life. Be that the life of a complete stranger, someone you love, or even yourself. Every 9 weeks, or 63 days, or 1512 hours, or even 36288 minutes, depending on how you want to split it up, is how often you can donate your blood. This means you could help save as many as five people a year.
Cost
What does it cost you? Absolutely nothing but a bit of time. It’s absolutly free and they even give you a drink, some donuts, maybe a cookies or some other snack. If you go often enough, the Canadian Blood Services will even give you a free pin to tell people how often you help save a life. And every time I have gone the staff have always been friendly and very happy to see me.
“But Mark, I donate money to charities and other organization.”
Well you are lucky enough to be able to do so, that’s great. I, myself, am a poor college student on a very fixed budget. I give blood because I know I don’t give to other orginizations that could help to save someone and I know that after I give blood, I feel like I have helped someone. I know it makes me feel great. I also know that I will still be able to afford to go to school after I donate as it will not drain my wallet.
“Ok fine, I’ll tell you the truth, I am afraid of needles. Happy now?”
Aww, poor baby, want some cookies? Well, you can have one after you give blood. I must admit, I don’t like needles either, but I know I am helping to save a life, and if I have to experience a little pain to do that, it is not so bad. You have to remember that the people taking your blood have done it thousands of time, and are actually quite good at giving a nearly pain free session. I also find it helps to look away while they prick my arm. I can tell you from experience, it hurts 100x less then getting a tattoo or a piercing for that matter.
If you want to feel great, still be able to afford things, and feel like getting some free cookies or donuts and a free drink. Then roll up your sleeve, bite the bullet and donate you blood today!
