Have you had the same hair cut since high school? Since elementary school? I know my mother has not changed her hair since she got out of high school back in 1983. Over twenty years with the same hairstyle is pretty crazy, especially these days. It grows out of style and as your face changes, it will look boring, dull, or just plain wrong. You can mess around with it and do something crazy with it, it will grow back, or grow out, unless you are going bald.
Now, if you have chosen to highlight your hair, you have to decide if you are going to do it yourself, or have it done by a professional? Personally, I would not trust my hair in anyone’s hands other then a professional, only because I have some bad experiences with an amateur and the electric hair cutters.
Obviously, it is going to be more expensive if you go with a professional over the do-it-yourself kit, but the results will be better. Also, if there is a problem with the dying, then the professional can fix the error, usually, and hopefully free of charge. Lastly, if it is not light enough for you, they can do it again without it doing too much damage to your hair.
It is all up to you since you are going to have to be the one living with these changes. I get my hair highlighted every other time I get my hair cut and I love the way it looks on me, I find that it gives depth and range to the color of my hair as well as taking a few years off of my look.
