Ah, the Christmas season is upon us.  It’s a time to be picking out the perfect gifts for the occasion, getting beautiful cards to send to our friends, and get into the mood of giving and sharing.

What better way to get your household into the Christmas mood, than to pick out a nice tree?

Get the right size

Get some measurements in the bag before you start out shopping.  Consider the maximum width to pass through the hall or any doorways.  You want to be able to move the tree into your house with minimal damage to the tree.  Also consider the height limit with a tree stand and an angel or star on top, so your design and decorations won’t be compromised.

Pick your species

Blue spruces have a pretty silvery hue but prickly needles. The Douglas, Fraser and the Noble species, which hold their needles longer, are two of the most popular, but don’t look as good.  Balance your needs and you should be fine.

Freshness tests

Avoid trees that have been lying in piles or in the sun; they can be dry and brittle.  Take hold of a branch and pull your hand toward you, allowing the branch to slip through your fingers. Most, if not all, of the needles should stay on the tree.  Also give the tree a gentle shake to be sure they aren’t dropping green needles.

With that, you should be well on your way to getting a beautiful tree for yourself.
