Do you worry about being attacked by a vicious dog. Fearful of pitbulls running off-lead in the park?

Here are five tips to bear in mind:
- Keep your hands reasonably high as moving parts tend to be the first to be bitten.
- Shout ‘No’ at the dog as this may delay the attack. Avoid direct eye contact and, if the dog starts to come towards you, try to distract it with something you may be carrying.
- If you find your pet under attack, try not to interfere unless you are experienced in the handling of dogs.
- Never try to pull your dog away as the attacker will hold on tighter: instead carry a thick stick which should be put in the attacking dog’s mouth to break the hold.
- Carry a mobile phone close to hand and if an attack should occur, call the local police or dog pound.

1I was walking in my neighborhood with my wife and my small dog (mini pinscher) when three aggressive and poorly trained pit bulls saw us through the front window of a single story home. They were so aggravated by the sight of us walking that they busted through the screen in the house. I never leave my home without a weapon (I live in Albuquerque, NM), I also have a concealed carry license. In this case all three pit bulls rushed toward us. Since I could see this becoming an issue before they ever got out of the house I pulled my knife out of my pocket and was prepared to stab any one of these dogs that got close enough to bite. As it turned out I maintained my ground with my wife and dog behind me. I took an aggressive posture and yelled very loud, they would not come within 10 feet of me. I’m convinced that had my wife and I attempted to retreat they would have attacked my dog or my wife. I am so disgusted with people who are not responsible with these potentially destructive and deadly animals. I am not opposed to aggressive dogs, in fact I am looking for a pure breed doberman pinscher. It is unfortunate that someday an aggressive dog will suffer its fate at my hands because of irresponsible pet owners. I will not be a victim to someone’s overly aggressive animal.
