A somewhat well known conspiracy theory that has been around since World War II is the Philadelphia Experiment.
The basic story goes that when testing with ultra powerful electromagnets to deflect radar around a ship, to make it invisible to the enemy, went horribly wrong when the ship itself played a little hop scotch (jumping around) in space/time.
With reports that the ship was not only invisible to radar, but became invisible to the naked eye, with the ship at one point teleporting to another part of the world and back.
The recent episodes of the ABC television series Lost have mentioned (spoiler alert!) that there is a powerful magnet in the underground hatch our cast occupies. And that there was an “incident” some time back. Again our now captured “Other” has mentioned how the island in a literal or philosophical way is invisible to God as well as the rest of the world.
Could this be a link? That the experiment that was performed was in the same manner as the Philadelphia experiment? That this powerful electromagnet is making the island invisible to the rest of the world, or perhaps popping into our world for the time just needed for a plane to crash on it?
Or we can just add this to the pile of crazy theories that this show causes everyone to make…
It’s this kind of thinking that makes this show both horrible and fun to watch. Myself, I have fun watching it, but I am waiting for the shows final episode, where I hope they answer all the questions they have introduced but thus far have never answered.
[ed. note: With the pace of the show they could stretch it out to ten or twenty seasons before they really answer anything. I suggest waiting for the season DVD's and watching it commercial free, as it will save you hours of time rather than trying to record, tivo, or even watch live the show as it comes out.]

1I agree totally!! I have never heard of this experiment but what you said is along the same lines as i am thinking. We know it has something to do with a govt experiment for sure, and that somehow space and time are not the same there. I do think it is some sort of messed up space time “hole” if you will they got caught in. The only thing that does not follow this line of thinking is all the “relationships” that they have with each other in the past. That brings in a metaphysical type of situation to me that goes beyond govt control. I almost lean toward a purgatory situation. I hope we are right and cant wait to find out.

2very interesting article. I didn’t know of the “Philadelphia Experiment”, but as you say it, many elements of the show recall this experiment.

3Yet another theory that “makes sense”…..very interesting indeed. Perhaps the Oceanic flight flew into the electromagnetic field which caused the malfunctions in the plane and therefor crashed it into the island. What the theory doesnt answer is this…..what the hell is that “black mist” that Mr.Eko stared down with in the jungle? Why didnt it get him like it tried with Locke?
There has to be a combo of theories that make up the truth here….

4You are right that there are a lot of unanswered questions in LOST, but I think the writers do a pretty good job of balancing give us answers and opening up new questions. If they never ever “threw us a bone” and answered some things, the show would really start to drag and become unsatisfying. That is certainly a possibility, but they’ve done a damn good job so far.

5I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this before - but the magnets could also be responsible for the curing of Locke’s paraplegia and Rose’s Cancer… There is anecdotal evidence re. the healing properties of magnets (eg: magnet bracelts, matress overlays etc..)

6I believe the Philadelphia experiment theory to be correct.
Have a search for Nikola Tesla.
Did you know he had the technology to destroy the planet !

10From wikipedia about Philadelphia Experiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_Experiment):
“Still other members, like Jacob D. Murray, were physically unaccounted for — supposedly “vanished” — and five of the crew were allegedly fused to the metal bulkhead or deck of the ship…”"
Is it why John Locke could not see Jacob?
