For homeowners who don’t have enough time for leisurely gardening, low maintenance plants provide economical solutions for your landscaping needs. These low maintenance plants have long lives, and most of them do not need to be replaced yearly. They are good for all kinds of weather, and they don’t need much watering, fertilization, or pruning. Ideally, they do not need to be made beautiful and that they should look their best the whole year round.
So which plants are low maintenance? That all depends on the climate of your location, as well as the amount of care you can provide.
For drought-prone areas, the “Longwood Blue” bluebeard is a good option. It’s a small shrub that can be planted as a backdrop to a beautiful flowerbed. While it sheds some of its leaves during fall, they do grow back in the winter, and its flowers bloom during the spring. Generally, slow-growing evergreen shrubs of this sort are great for low maintenance gardens.
The “Autumn Joy sedum” or “Autumn Joy stonecrop” plant is a good perennial plant for dry areas. It can grow in stony soil, which makes it suitable for rock gardens. During the late summer and the fall, it grows a variety of colored flowers that bloom in clusters. For best results, plant your Autumn Joy plant in the full sun. There is no need to prune this plant. However, it is advisable that dead stems and leaves are removed during late fall.
The hosta plant is known for having a long, adaptable life. This makes it one of the most popular low maintenance plants around. Hostas can grow in almost any type of climate, although they bloom best under the shade. However, they can also thrive in areas with full sun. They are often disease-free, although slugs and snails find them favorable as food. There are over 3000 varieties of hostas. You can find all major varieties listed at the Hosta Library.
Daylilies are one of the most adaptable plants available, and they can be grown in zones 1 to 11 of the USDA plant hardiness zones. Most species of daylilies have flowers that bloom in sunrise and wilt in sunset – only to be replaced by a new flower the next day. Because of this trait, daylilies are best grown under the full sun.
With all these available low maintenance flowering plants, your garden will look just as good as the gardens that require delicate care. The many varieties of flowers and blossoms from these types of plants and the very little amount of care they require make them ideal for landscaping purposes.
