This is for those of you who do, or want to do various jobs for clients whether it is designing a website, coding scripts, writing articles or this can even be applied to work outside of the internet world. The key concept here is to do your best work and have good business ethics. Sure, this may seem like the obvious answer but let me explain the side effects and various aspects of doing so — it is not that easy.
Follow Through
When you sign a contract, or make an agreement with a client you’re making an obligation to that person. This obligation comes with the moral aspect of things; it’s your job to do the best you can. It isn’t just this client that you should be concerned about; this is your reputation on the line. Many clients discuss past experiences with people they know, which means that if they have a bad experience, you will not be recommended by them. So you have to make every experience a good one, and keep them happy. Then you may find yourself with clients that only overheard a previous client singing your praises to a friend or relative.
Listen
Another key concept when dealing with a client is listening. You have to listen carefully to what they need or want that way when you get to the revision stage after completing the initial product there won’t be as much work to do and it will be less frustrating for you and your client.
Be Positive
If you make an agreement to do a job, you should get into a mindset where you think to yourself, “Yes, now I’ve made an obligation to do my best and to create a product suitable to my client’s needs.†If you have this mindset the transaction will go smoothly because you are being positive, and when you’re positive you produce a good result. In turn, this good result will keep the client happy. This is a simple concept that will do wonders for your business reputation. And remember, a satisfied client means that they are more than likely going to come to you before choosing another service/product provider.
I know this as I put it into practice for my business every day. I am currently a web designer/developer at Exit13.ca.
