It seems like opting for the diet version of your favorite carbonated drink doesn’t mean that your getting decaf. Diet Blog lists the Top 10 Most Caffeinated Diet Drinks and you have to be amazed at the numbers.
Who would have thought that Diet Pepsi Max (the top of the list of mg/12 oz cans) contains more caffeine (69 mg) than a teaspoon of instant coffee powder. Sure, you may not get sugar high, but you’d get a jolt from caffeine (that is, if you’re still affected by caffeine).
What’s amazing is that you’d probably expect that it’d be the cola drinks that would occupy top spots but at the number 2 and 3 spots respectively are Sun Drop (69 mg) and Mountain Dew (55 mg) which are citrus drinks. Another shocker is Diet Coke. Who’d expect that the diet version has more caffeine than the regular Coke.
I’ve practically stopped drinking carbonated drinks in general since 1) the regular versions contains too much sugar and 2) the diet version contain aspartame which is reported to cause cancer. I want to live just a tad bit longer than my folks (diabetics and dead) so I’ve been sticking to good old water as my drink of choice.

1Aspartame and cancer? Now, I would not be surprised if true (I’m not sure the FDA is really looking out for the people), but WebMD says, “not so”:

Back to the FDA, I found this article providing some interesting insight on the political machinations going on there, plus more about aspartame studies:

I will grant you that water has to be best for the human body.

2In any case, while scientists slug it out on the aspartame-cancer issue, I’d rather side on where I’d be safe. So I guess not consuming it at all would place me on the safe side just in case it is proved to be true. But if it’s just a hoax, no harm done to me as well.
Thanks for sharing those two insightful takes on the issue.

3I drink a diet soda every now and then- I actually love the extra caffeine kick in the afternoon. I have not yet tried Diet Pepsi Max, but I have seen their commercials, which are pretty entertaining- they have a whole yawning theme- you can see them on their website: http://www.wakeuppeople.com
