According to Jaclyn Kostner’s doctoral dissertation on geographically dispersed work teams, the prime issue of remote workers is career implosion that is caused by lack of communication. Until now, it is still viewed as an issue despite all the improvements in remote worker management technologies.

Kostner then formulated the CARE model for communicating between remote personnel and managers. CARE stands for:

  • Changes in project status, working hours, partnership agreements and anything else that affects performance.
  • Accomplishments, both team and individual.
  • Requests for tools, personnel and anything else they need to be more effective.
  • Environmental details that can affect productivity in the remote workplace.

I think this model would help remote workers a lot, especially those not equipped with sophisticated remote project management applications. It’s brief, it’s concise, and every information is relevant.
