Blogging in one’s boxers (or pajamas) has been a term used for bloggers and some telecommuters who never give squat about what they wear when they work. Besides, that’s the beauty in telecommuting, you don’t have to be there physically and you work in your preferred way. If you like blogging in the buff, you can do so. No one sees you anyway.
But is there a psychological impact to the way we work and the clothes we wear?
Some people think that clothes are for other people – something to hide our naked selves with so that others need not barf at our flabby bodies, unlessss of course, you look like a Greek statue, buff and cut. But haven’t we felt something else whenever we wore our favorite article of clothing or first worn a newly bought (and quite pricey) pair of shoes? I know kids think (or at least feel) that they can dunk a basketball with their new pair of LeBrons.
For telecommuters, clothing isn’t that much of an issue since they don’t need to personally interface with other people, save perhaps if you need to video conference with people. But even in that, if you only show your bust shot, you can still be in your boxers.
Some productivity experts say that there is a psychological impact. Being a slob (blogging in your boxers or God forbid, in the buff) can reflect on your work. Perhaps your work can turn out to be too sloppy. And I do believe them.
While I am not attempting to present ideas that are grounded and supported by psychological studies, I’d like to share what some of my fellow probloggers and myself think of this matter.
There are certain limits to how home-based your telecommute work is. At least as a problogger, justify the “pro” prefix in your title and be professional. Have you seen any decent CEO report to his top-floor office in his boxers? Well, just don’t cite Heff as an example.
If there’s a “dress for success” saying for report-to-office pros, then there should also the “dress to be at your best” saying for telecommuters. And it isn’t always being in your most comfortable like in your boxers. Settle down on a routine where, you wake up, you shower, you dress, and then you sit down to work. You’ll find that it gives you a better sense of responsibility and eliminates the feeling of “I want to get back into bed” feeling if you sit down in front of your computer in your PJs.
