So you’ve got the next big thing swirling around in your brain…or maybe you’ve even produced a prototype of some sort. Whatever stage you’re at, you have decided to apply for a patent. The question is how?

Well, to be honest, it’s not that hard. The hard part actually comes in the writing of the patent. You are going to have keep your words carefully placed, and you will also need technical drawings of invention for the patent. In all honesty it is highly recommended that you do not do this without the assistance of an attorney that knows what he/she is going. This can be tricky stuff, and one wrong word, and you’ve totally blown it.

However, if you still want to try it for yourself, it couldn’t be a more straight forward process.

• Fill Out a Patent Application - you can do this online
• Submit it to the Patent Office - again, you can do this online now.
• Wait -  (it can take up to Three years to get one approved)
• Ammend and Appeal - most patent applications are rejected the first time.  You will most likely need to Amend and Appeal the initial application
• Wait some more - again, up to 3 years.
• Hope for the best - Keep trying and keep waiting.  Eventually your application will be completely rejected, or issued.
