Sometime, when you’re in a creative slump, it’s really hard to come up with ideas. For someone who needs it for a living (writers, bloggers, and other people in creative work), it’s like hitting a solid brick wall. And it’s quite frustrating most of the time. Overcoming that block is quite tough too. Some argue it just clicks. Some say it’s a discipline. I personally think both can be true.
In any case, here are some tips on how to come up with new ideas. This comes as a supplement to my post on how to brainstorm too.
Think aimlessly
One of the reasons why you meet a block is because, you’re trapping your mind in a box. Let your mind wander. Think of everything even if you think it’s crazy or silly or too grand.
Narrow down
Jot down all the thoughts that went into your head during the thought process. You’ll probably have a substantial list. The next step is to narrow them down. Pick ones that are in tune with what you plan to do.
Dig deeper
Now after you’ve created a list, it’s time to weed out the unreasonable ones through research. Putting in some time on the net or in the library will lead you to understanding more about your idea, probably gain from other people’s takes on the matter too. Added research can help expand your thoughts too.
Support
Now that you’ve done your homework it’s time to revisit your list once again. Maybe you can mash some together to make a a better one. Don’t try too hard. Sometimes, taking a break and not looking at the list will make you see it in a different light the next time.
Choose the best
After all the refinement pick the best one. You’ll need to focus so just pick one. Don’t worry, you can still keep the list for further endeavors.
Execute
Now gear up and work on the idea. Whatever project, task, or endeavor it is, better keep your focus and concentrate your efforts in making your idea happen.
