Sometimes, it takes a guy from below to give the boss some much needed perspective to make the right decisions. However, there are times when the thought of saying anything less than a praise can be quite tricky. Either the boss takes it well, or you’re painting a bullseye on your back. So be careful when you plan to criticize the boss. Here are some pointers.

Be sure that the boss can handle criticism. The greatest risk in criticizing is if the boss doesn’t want to be told what to do, especially by a subordinate. Criticizing your boss might require a good enough relationship (working or otherwise) between the two of you for it to work.

Keep it private. Criticizing people is, in effect, asserting authority over them. So it’s a no-no to criticize your boss in front of other people. Respect reporting lines.

Time it right. No point in criticizing people when stress levels are high. Nerves are usually frayed during these periods making people a tad more sensitive. Choose a when things are not too hectic and when there’s enough time for you to talk things over.

Be objective. Remember that criticism should always be aimed to result in positive change. So be objective and constructive with your criticism. Phrase it in such a way that the criticism’s directed to one specific area. Balancing this with a compliment about the person’s strengths would help to buffer the criticism.
