I’ve felt the pressure of being under a workaholic boss – the type who starts working at 6 AM in the morning and stops around midnight. If your employer makes very unreasonable demands that works starts to breach your own personal time, then you might have to consider your work.
It’s quite common these days to have a boss who thinks that you should match their workaholic pace perhaps, even work during weekends. The first sign that made me start deciding on my future with that organization was when that guy reprimanded me for calling in sick. Long story but imagine having to turn off you phone since it won’t stop ringing while on the doctor’s examination table being hounded by your boss.
All you have to do is to talk to your boss and try to explain to him/her that having your personal time is essential in keeping yourself in tip-top shape and that you would gladly appreciate it if he/she respects this. (Besides, they should.)
If your boss says he understands, then your boss is probably a very reasonable man. However, be wary of how he agrees with you. If you feel in your gut some sort of psychological pressure to do otherwise, seriously contemplate your future with such a boss. Most workaholic bosses are also control freaks. If they don’t get what they want, they usually get disappointed with such reasons. It would be your call but no reason to be the whipping boy or girl of a workaholic boss.
