Screw holes in wood wear out over time so here are some ways to fix a worn out screw hole.
Screw Hole Repair Strips
Now, it’s a good thing, we now have these available in hardware stores. These are metal strips that you could drive into the hole with the screw. The screw gets packed tight since the metal strip “bites” into the wood. Plus, you still get to unscrew it.
Wooden Pegs
Another fix that might need a bit more work is by repacking the hole with a wooden peg that’s also used to cover up drill holes. Dip the peg into wood/carpenter’s glue, pack it in, then trim it flush with a chisel or a small jigsaw. Once hardened and dried, the wood’s like new, ready for the screw.
Emergency Repair
For a quick fix (provided that you don’t have the materials cited above), you can improvise your own wooden pegs. You can pack the screw holes with matchsticks. The screw will bite into the matchsticks and cause them to expand and pack nice and tight. This quick fix is better done with a longer/larger screw.

1I find that toothpicks work extremely well. You basically fill the holes with flat toothpicks covered in carpenters glue and then clip them off at the edge.

There’s a tutorial with a step by step picture process that I used.
