Now this might have happened to you but we sure hope it hasn’t. Ever had that musty smell inside your car? The smell of some old chest that cradled a pair of stinking old gym socks. Ugh.
The musty smell can be associated with a lot of different possible problems in your car but the culprit is all the same – moisture in the cabin. With that in mind, you just have to know why is there water inside your car. Leaks and body rusting and damage are the most common reasons why water gets in. Or perhaps you spilled water inside the car. Driving in flooded terrain and slush can also cause water to seep in from gaps.
The key to getting rid of the musty smell is to dry out any wet parts before mildew sets in. And just in case it already did, here are some ways on how you can rid of mildew along with the nasty smell from your car.

2Great article, thanks. Here’s one more tip. After you follow the directions on this post, go out and get a few of those Innofresh AUTO odor eliminators. They are these great activated carbon filters that you can get at some auto stores and on line at http://www.innofresh.com
This product is totally fragrance free so no worry about those irritating products that just cover up odors. Innofresh auto actually gets rid of them.
It was recommended by a store clerk at a store and I’ve been telling people since. Definitely worth trying if your car smells from spilled stuff and pets and even smoke.

3I drove a Honda CR-V to and fro and all about–bearing children, dog and all kinds of stuff in the damp Oregon weather for eleven years. You had better bet that car got musty and mustier. Early on I learned to do three things: 1) keep the windows open a crack whenever I parked it just to keep the air flowing, 2) run the air conditioner to dry it out whenever driving, and 3) keep a net bag of xeolite in the car, making sure to put it up on the dash in the sun when parked once in awhile to “cleanse it” from the odors it absorbed. I recently sold the car and all the people to looked at the car commented that it had no significant unpleasant odor. That was proof enough for me. Still, the new car is off limits to the dog!
