There are so many ways in improving your memory. I’ve stumbled upon a bunch of these techniques in developing a lean mean memory.

Here’s one technique called “chunking.”

Now this method is actually being used and we don’t just realize it. Ever wonder why phone numbers are segmented or “chunked” together? Like 987 45 56. Or 1-800-123-456.

By chunking information into smaller pieces, you efficiently use your short term memory to help you remember. You can even use mnemonic devices to associate with the chunks.

Here’s one cool example of chunking and I have to credit my high school chemistry teacher for this. Now we had to memorize stuff like Avogdro’s constant, which is in simplified high school chemistry is 6.022 x 10^23 mol^-1. During that time, Michael Jordan was still hot from his 2nd three-peat so he had us chunk the information. Here’s how we used to go about it:

6 NBA Championships
0 Losses in the Finals
2 Slam Dunk Championships
2 Olympic Gold Medals
10 (Well, 10 is pretty is pretty easy to remember.
^23 Jersey Number

So every time we had to remember Avogadro’s constant we just thought of Mike’s resume, with which we had a better time recalling.
