Memory Aids

I’ve already posted a couple of techniques before. Here’s one on a technique called chunking and another one using imagery. Now let me round up my set of memory improvement tips with this post and share with you a few more techniques on improving your memory. These do not only apply to students but a good memory can help you in a lot of ways. Ever forgot where you put your car keys?

Talk to yourself

You may look crazy but talking out loud and repeating things will help you commit a thought or idea into memory.

Use rhymes and other associations

Ever played those name games when you were a kid. Well they sure work. Sometimes they’re mean but you’d remember Dorky Dick for the rest of your life, right? If you’re musically inclined, why not make a tune out of it and use the little song as a mnemonic device.

Use others as memory banks

Yeah, why not? Openly discuss important reminders to other people. While this may not improve your memory but at least someone will be there to remind you.

Use some cheat sheets and crib notes

Writing down the things you have to memorize helps. And don’t be afraid to use such a device (unless, of course, you’re in a test). With constant use, you’ll eventually memorize the items on your cheat sheet so you won’t need it anymore.

Memorize before bedtime

Some studies show that new information stored right before sleep sinks down to your subconscious and memory. So read on new stuff right before catching Zs.

Eat and live healthy

Constantly destroying your brain cells wouldn’t help your memory at all. So eat healthy and avoid those all-night drinking binges. Eat right and on time. Exercise also stimulates the brain.

Organize

If you constantly misplace your stuff (like car keys), always have a set place to put them. Like your keys will always be in your right pocket. Physical organization mimics your minds process of organizing information in your head, which is practically memory work.

Play card and board games

Card games and board games stimulate the mind. These games also help you practice your memory skills too. Play but don’t gamble. It’s not worth the risk of losing your dollars just to enhance your brain power.
