Clothing emergencies do happen. A button popped here. A hemline goes unstitched there. And it’s not daily that you carry a handy sewing kit with you. Here are some quick fixes on the go.

  1. Always have safety pins handy. It’d be wise to bring one of different sizes too.
  2. Buttons with shanks can be held in place by safety pins until you can sew them back on.
  3. For other quick button fixes, they can be sewn in place with some dental floss. This would even work great for your active wear where buttons need to be secured by stronger threads. Try using dental floss or fishing line.
  4. Unstitched hemlines can be fixed quickly by a few staples (yes, that handy office stapler). If you’re wearing stockings and afraid of a snag, staple inside out.
  5. Sticky tape can hold some fabric temporarily.
  6. If you have an access to an iron, fusible tape or fabric glue can be used to hold fabrics. A word of warning though, these might ruin some fabrics so be very, very careful.
  7. If you need to expand your waistband a bit (due to bouts of overindulgence perhaps), try using some good-duty rubber bands to loop from the button hole and the button. Just make sure your upper garment covers the waistband.
