Conversation

Dull and boring conversations are get-together killers. So don’t be a party pooper by being a dull conversationalist. You can be good at it. Here are some tips you might want to follow the next time you’re engaged in conversation.

Talk about controversial topics

Many would advise against discussing taboo topics but this is where you get your bang. Skilled conversationalists can discuss such topics without being too offensive. While it takes skill to do just that, you’ll make a rep doing so.

Don’t debate discuss

This is how you make controversial topics bearable within conversations. Avoid slugging it out as people will always have varying feelings and opinions on the matter. Just lightly exchange views.

Take turns in speaking and listening

Conversation isn’t all talk. Don’t hog the spotlight. Remember, conversations are two-way. Avoid merely hearing things. Listen. It wouldn’t hurt if you make and maintain eye contact too.

Keep things on track

Make sure you string along questions and responses in line with what has been said to keep the topic flowing. Don’t go talking about the third-world construct one instant then switch to the Care Bears the next. People get much more out of talking about things in-depth.

Stick to your stand

Conversations will have disagreements within them but the least you can do is to be firm with your stand. While you may not persuade people to take the same side as yours, you’ll come out as someone who sticks to his/her principles.

Pauses are fine

Moments of silence are fine so don’t go on filling every 5-second lapses. Pauses serve as mental breaks that refresh the mind. Use them to compose thoughts.
