Here’s an interesting Windows download that can help you pass the time while exercising you creativity. It’s Pivot Stickfigure Animator by a guy named Peter Bones. It’s free. It’s quick. It’s easy.
So here’s a quick rundown of great features of this amazing little software.
- Small It’s a mere 837KB installer (almost halved when zipped) so it’s a quick download. It consumes very little space after installation.
- Easy The interface is quite intuitive. All you have to do is to click on your stickfigure and tweak it’s pose. The bones (vertices) are rigged automatically which allows for a great ragdoll effect. Just keep on adding frames on the timeline and make subtle changes in the figure’s pose. It also has an “onion skin effect” so that you could track the differences you’ve made between the current and previous frames.
- Basic No need for artistic skills that would put Da Vinci to shame. Stickfigures are stickfigures. You’re also dealing with 2D animation so there’s no need to worry about depth and perspectives. You can also add more figures or edit them to create other objects. You can even import an external image file to use as background.
- Quick After creating a series of images, you’re ready to go. Just click on “Play” to preview your animation. The result can be saved in either the editable PIV file, animated GIF, and BMP formats.
- Fun I’ve been dealing with Flash and I’ve experienced the tedious work of frrame-by-frame animation. PSA’s simplicity puts the fun back into learning animation because you don’t have to learn all sorts of fancy commands and tools.
- Free
I used to use this to teach animation basics to grade school students and they love it. There’s no need for advanced design skills and artistic talent to make something really interesting.
It’s a simple piece of software that wouldn’t rival what you can do with high-end vector animation software like Flash but it’s great enough to start learning the intricate process of frame-by-frame 2D animation.
Here’s what I was able to do in a couple or so minutes:

Download Pivot Stickfigure Animator here.

2Sorry, Pivot Stickfigure Animator is for the Windows PC only. I haven’t found a simple stickfigure animation app for the Mac yet. Let’s hope we can find one.

11is there another animator ive tried this one it takes too long and i go to http://www.stickpage.com and they must be using a different program
Alex
June 2nd, 2007 at 7:26 pm
12The ones you find on Stick Page are done by expert animators too. Yes, they use Flash and probably other Flash animation tools. Using them would be a lot faster and smoother. Problem is, these are paid software. Easy to learn and they work fast but you have to invest on the tools first.

21Hi, guys.
Here’s Peter Bone’s reply on creating a Mac version:
“Sadly pivot was coded using Delphi and so a cross platform version would be difficult without rewriting the whole thing. I’ll try my best to work out a way of doing it once I have version 3 finished.”
Let’s just keep our fingers crossed.

38I talked to Peter Bone and his response was “I have no intentions of making a Mac version, sadly. I am working on more advanced programming, and juggling”
The juggling part confused me lol.

39Sucks. I know Peter personally. He ain’t gonna do it. He’s really busy with an extremely complicated new program. I’m not sure what it is because I haven’t talked to him in awhile. I used to be one of his top animators back in my hay day, on my pc…hours of practice. But PSA was still amazing fun.
Also, for those of you looking for PSA 3, it doens’t exist. The only PSA 3 that you’ve seen is a very premature beta, meaning it is so full of bugs, it would kill an exterminator.
He only issued it to people like me (top animators), and if somebody knows somebody who has it, it was probably a boot leg version stolen from a test site. They’re screwing their animations down the toilet. I advise anyone to use 2.2.5 before they lose all their stuff.
Thank you.

47There is a new program for Macs called Stykz. It’s almost exactly like Pivot (but better :3). It’s still in development, but the open beta for Mac (and now even Windows) is at http://stykz.net.
Hope this helped ;D

48pivot, All you have to do is when your in pivot and saving a video save it as a GIF animation, go into windows movie maker and click “import video” the at the bottom bar at the window that should of popped up, click “picture files” and go to the location where its saved click on the GIF and the window should of disappeared and it should be on the top part of the screen. make sure your on the timeline (if its not look at the bottom part and click “show timeline”)then drag the GIF on the top bar and if you want to add music or sounds (i dont recomend music, 2 of my videos got removed cause of music and i didnt have permission) add them on the 2nd bar below the other one. click save video and let it save to where ever and go on youtube and click upload video then select where its at, go through some options and there you go!!
Hope This Helps,
Brandon
