Ear pain while flying is caused by your eardrums expanding and contracting due to the changes in pressure. This might often cause discomfort, slight hearing loss, ringing in ear and dizziness. Here are some prevention techniques.
Chewing gum. The pressure of your middle ear and outer ear is usually the same because of the tube that connects your middle ear to the back of your nose called the eustachian tube. When you swallow, the tube opens up to equalize the pressure which you will do repetitively when you chew gum.
Colds. Avoid flying when you have a cold or nasal congestion. If you need to fly with a stuffy head, take nose drops or antihistamines (if you have an allergy) to minimize stuffiness. However, consult with your doctor first if doing this will be. You might have other conditions that may be complicated by other medicine.
Use filtered earplugs. These are widely available in airport boutiques and local drugstores. These plugs slowly equalize the pressure against your eardrum during takeoff and landing.
Avoid alcohol. Alcohol dilates the veins increasing the risk of rupture. Drink plenty of water instead.
Avoid sleeping. You won’t swallow as much to relieve the pressure in your ears.
