Muggers and pickpockets often work with speed and surprise on their side. You always have to be alert to avoid getting victimized. In any case, you can’t really predict if your luck runs out all of a sudden but there are ways to minimize your losses just in case you get mugged.
Safeguard you wallet. The best places for you to keep your wallet would be in your front breast pocket and front pants pocket. Most people keep their wallets in their back pockets and it’s just way too easy for pickpockets to get them. If your pockets are large enough, you might want to insert the wallet sideways to make it harder to lift out.
Separate your bills. Spread your money across your person. Keep a reasonable amount in your wallet (so that the mugger won’t expect a ruse that could make him angry). Keep some in each of your pockets. They may take your wallet but at least you can still get a cab to the precinct or home.
Keep another holder for ID cards. One can easily exploit your identity these days. So avoid making the mistake of keeping all important items inside your wallet. Have a different holder to keep your ID cards. If you want to extend this precaution, use another one for your credit card.
Bring only one card. Cards should only be carried for emergency purposes. So when casually going out, just bring one, ideally the one with the lowest credit limit.
Don’t place a spare key. Some people carry spare keys in their wallets. Just don’t.
Grip bags tightly. Thieves can easily snatch purses and handbags with great ease. It would be wise to always keep a tight grip on your valuables when in public places.
Don’t resist. If someone sticks you up, cooperate. Usually, it’s just the wallet they’re after. Just be sure to inform the mugger that you’re just getting your wallet. They might get jumpy because of your sudden movement.
