Chair Rail

Does your wall look plain and boring? Has it been of the same solid color ever since? No need to call a handyman because you can install chair rails all by yourself! It’s just basic carpentry. So get your toolbox and start learning.

  • Mark the wall where you will place the molding. Make sure that the layout is clear so as to get the results you have in your mind. Also, make sure that everything is level and flush. Prime and paint molding then let it dry completely.
  • Measure your molding. Use a miter box to saw 45-degree angles to make for corners. Make sure you have read about crash courses on using how to use a saw and about placement of molding.
  • Locate studs with a stud finder. Mark the wall to indicate where you’ll be putting the nails. Use a pencil. Mark the molding in the same way.
  • Use a drill to put holes to the stud mark or nail marks. Position the molding to a flat working table and drill a pilot hole.
  • Hammer a nail carefully about ¾ of the way into each drilled hole. Secure molding with nails using a nail set and a hammer.
  • Nail holes should be polished with wood putty and knife. Let them dry then re-touch the paint on the molding to ensure even-ness of paint in the molding.
