Winter is not just about trendy faux fur coats and snow storms, it’s also about your garden being a victim of the fierce cold. As soon as temperature starts to drop and the cold has become too cold, you’ll find that some of your plants will die. So much for your gardening efforts the whole year; when winter comes it all ends in frost.
To preserve your garden despite of the less-than-ideal weather conditions, know how to repair and save your piece of Eden.
You should know that below the surface, plants are coping with their own winter blues. Some of your plants are growing roots and are dependent on the nutrients and soil moisture available for them. One smart way to help your plants cope is to provide mulch. You can use the leaves scattered on your garden.
Check your trees and help unload some of the snow that might break their branches. Clean up the garden and remove eggs of pests and disease spores that could endanger your other plants. Make compost out of dead plants. Your compost should make up a hot and active pile so that it can wipe out weed. Rake up withering plants.
Prepare your roses for winter. Among the types of roses, the hybrid tea roses are the most vulnerable to the cold. Hold any major pruning because the buds will also be subjected to the fierce frost.
