
Generally, extension cords are safety hazards and some local legislation and safety codes do not allow their use. So if you are to use cords, better check with your local codes if they’re legal. Most codes require every six feet along the walls and this applies to newer homes. Most old homes were not and are not required to have this.
As a general rule, extension cords are just a temporary solution. If you are to use it, make sure that you secure it down with some electrical tape. You might Always disconnect a cord at both ends when not in use.
Avoid overloading electrical outlets especially extension cords. As much as you can, use only one appliance per extension cord. One of the other things you have to check before using an extension cords is the ampere rating. Never ever exceed the ampere rating. You are actually risking sparks if you do.
Never run extension cords under rugs. If you find yourself using extension cords most of the time, consider having an electrician do the rerouting or add an outlet for you.
If you need to repair extension cords (especially if the insulation is frayed or cracked with the wires showing), it’s better if you discard it and purchase a new one. Don’t take the risk by wrapping the cord with insulating electrical tape. If it’s the plug that is damaged, replace the plug with a new one.
