One of the most frustrating moments for yourself is when you find yourself avoiding the spotlight when you can outshine everyone else! You prepare yourself for a party, curls and all, but when you get there you hang out in the kitchen. What are you doing?!?
How do you suppose to get the most out of life when you keep pulling a low-profile? It’s about time you beat your shyness and just be comfortable in the spotlight whenever you get it.
Ask yourself. When does your shyness overwhelm you? Do you suddenly become shy when your crush walks by, when you talk to a stranger, or when you deliver a speech? Recognizing your weak moments is the first step to mending these bad situations.
When you suddenly spot your crush walking towards you, there is no need to panic or go blank. Pretend as if you’re not crazy about him and just say hi like you do other people. He’ll appreciate your casual attitude and may even get attracted to your sudden confidence and new-found guts!
When suddenly in a party you find yourself around someone you haven’t met yet, try to be approachable and have a little chitchat. You’re supposed to socialize in a party, anyway. Besides, how do you gain friends if you only talk to those you’re already chums with?
Delivering a speech requires attitude. You have to speak with conviction and this will not happen if you stammer all throughout your speech. Practice speaking in front of a mirror so you’ll be more confident when speaking in front of people.
When caught unaware. If by some bad luck, your teacher suddenly announces that today is the day you’ll be giving that oral report instead of next week as scheduled, don’t panic. If you have studied your report to some extent, you’ll be fine. The question is, how are you going to present when you’re less than ready? The most important thing to do is to gather your notes about your report and make sure you have in your head (or in your notes regardless it it’s just a draft) an outline of your report. Discuss your points as you have understood it and let your outline guide you until the end. Report is not only about the content. You might be surprised how your classmates react more to your gestures than to your oral report.
Breathe. Take long breaths when you suddenly feel shy. Take a moment, close your eyes and tell yourself it’s going to be ok. Remind yourself of your assets like if you have a great smile and everybody knows it, then smile a lot. If you have a great body then don’t slouch. If you convince yourself that you’re not shy, then you just might fool yourself in the beginning and actually feel more confident towards the end.
