Insulation

It’s nearing the cold months again and you should be looking into checking your insulation. Proper insulation will save you a lot in heating bills over the cold months. The ideal time to do this is spring since fall is the busiest time for contractors. However, since it’s already way past the good summer months, better start taking steps for this home maintenance routine.

Contact a good contractor and let them give you an estimate. It’s best for them to check your home first before settling with a price since you have to know that these areas are covered:

  • The exact areas to insulated. A thorough check is needed for this one. Make sure they check your house from top to bottom.
  • The specific material and brand to be used.
  • Depending on your locality, a specific thermal measurement may be needed. The material must have a specific heat loss rating to withstand the temperature in your area. Make sure you take note of this.
  • Be sure to get the total cost and the breakdown up to the specific like the materials, installation and cleanup costs, and taxes.

There are a lot of different materials for insulation. Mineral wool (a combination of fiberglass and rock wool) and cellulose are the most common materials. Just be sure to check guarantees for heat rating (called the R-value), inflammability, moisture absorption, shrinking, and sound proofing. Insulation using urea formaldehyde has been banned of toxicity.

Attic insulation should provide proper ventilation. Moisture from condensation can easily ruin an insulation job. This can even invite mold to settle and that wouldn’t be too good for your health. Vapor barriers are often installed to prevent water from getting through.
