Now here’s something to look forward to. Apple is reported to be in talks and negotiations with Hollywood studios to explore the possibilities of an online movie rental service. This is most probably a move to engage this market which already contains players like Netflix, MovieLink and Xbox Live.
On the details, Kristen Nicole of Mashable writes:
While Apple already has online movies available to be purchased and downloaded, there is not yet a rental service from Apple. Considering Disney and Paramount’s existing relationships with Apple, these are studios likely to be involved with the talks, as they are already comfortable with online downloads. It would cost a reported $2.99 to keep a movie for 30 days, and would have the ability to be viewed on one other device, such as the iPod or iPhone. Digital management would keep the movies from being copied.
Apple is obviously pushing for better claims in multimedia and entertainment with its product lines which include the iPod, Apple TV, and the iPhone which offers more than just communication. Then again, it’s pretty hard to contend with piracy and the ease of downloading via torrent. Nothing seems to beat the value of free, never mind if it’s piracy.
