One tip an artist friend gave me is to observe classical art or pictures of nature since the masters usually have perfected the use of color, and nature, well, you can’t go wrong with nature. Now the problem remains, how do you extract the color schemes from paintings and photos? That remained a problem until I stumbled upon this site - Color Palette Generator.

It lets you place a URL of an online image and what it does is extract the colors from the picture and automatically generate a palette for you with choices of either using the dull colors or the vibrant ones. It also provides you a link to Color Hunter which features a lot of classy picture-generated palettes for your use.
