Designers often have a keen eye on fonts. Some can even identify the font and its details down to the name, size and style. Pretty amazing if you ask me. But how about the rest of us normal people who’d just want to know what a certain font’s name is so that we could download it.
Sure Googling some of the key words associated to them can help. Like Googling for “star wars font” will be okay. But how about some expert service for those fonts that you don’t have anything associated with them. Like a font you saw on a magazine or an ad.
Searching font databases can be quite exhausting and if you don’t have a really keen eye, you might just end up with another font. But fret not. Here’s WhatTheFont. I’ve used this particular web service for a few times now to my satisfaction. It always gets me the right font.
It lets you upload a scanned image of the text or refer an image URL online. The service will then analyze the fonts in the image and search for the matches or reveal the closest ones based on your input. It even recognizes uppercase and lowercase letters. If all else fails, they even have a forums where real people can look into your query and provide you with the answers. Pretty sweet. After the search you can look for the font for download (if free) or purchase it for your own use.
