Ever been given a spit of champagne? Don’t fret, it’s not a glob of good aged saliva. It’s just a half pint of champagne! But where the heck did they come up with such terms. Well, the reasons were supposedly lost in history (If someone, knows, please leave a comment!), but most of the big wine bottles have Biblical names.
And here are some of the names of the measurements for wine:
1/2 pint – spit
1/8 gallon – pint
1/4 gallon – quart (a bottle)
2 quarts – magnum
4 quarts – Jeroboam
6 quarts – Rehoboam
8 quarts – Methuselah
12 quarts – Salmanasar
16 quarts – Balthazar
20 quarts – Nebuchadnezzar

1I have an etched and hand painted wine bottle that I made into a lamp. Could you please tell me the “name” of this type of bottle and the quantity of wine it originally held? It is 20 inches high and the bottom measures approx. 6 inches across. The winery is Van Duzer and the bottle was etched and painted by Bergin who is located in Napa, CA.
