It is good to be always on the lookout for something better that might come along. We are talking about a new, and way better job offer. But how do you say goodbye to everyone in the office?
The moment you have decided on accepting a new job offer you have to tell your boss right away. You can do this by scheduling a meeting and telling your boss that you have been accepted to work somewhere else. You don’t have to explain in graphic detail why you’re leaving because this could be uncomfortable. Show your gratitude and appreciation. Thank your boss for the many things you have learned under his management. Hand in a concise and polite resignation letter.
Move on. The possibility of your boss asking you to stay is not far-fetched. Your boss may not want you to go but you have to weigh your options. If your boss asks you to stay, there might be an increase in your present salary. But then again, think of long-term plans. If you have very important reasons for redirecting your career then move on and take the new and exciting job. A new job will teach you new things and make you meet more people.
What if they want you out — now! If the company you’re transferring to is a competitor of the company you’re leaving, you could be encouraged to leave immediately. Before you give any notice to your new company, bargain for a turnover period to allow for a proper transition for your old company. If you’ve been using your PC for personal purposes, get your files off your PC. However, be professional enough not to leak confidential documents out of your old company to the new one.
Remember. Not because you’ve moved on to another firm you have the right to blast all the things you disliked about your former company . Some industries are tightly-knit that one bad reputation you leave in one company may reflect badly on you in the eyes of the other players in the industry.
