Sure, the line “believe in yourself” has been over-used and it has lost its magic in the process. But that’s because it’s just words. People who live by those words aren’t getting everything they want by just fooling around. They get ahead because they’re walk the talk. Now that is where you need help from us.

You may not notice it, but half the total of your office hours, you have spent on going through your things and deciding what to do today. You need a planner and you need to work by the clock. Too much time is wasted when you’re living the day as you feel like it. You didn’t finish your portfolio because you were in the mood to make your progress report.

You say to yourself you’re not wasting time because what you were doing was work, too. The thing is, the progress report is not due until next month, but your presentation is next week. You still think you’re doing it right? If you chart your deadlines on a calendar, you will know be more strategic in your work.

Be professional in dealing with your officemates. It’s always rewarding to form new friendships and you like to hang-out with your colleagues after work because they seem to be cool. But you must understand that there is a big risk when you form a bond with your officemates.

One, emotions can stop you from firing an incompetent employee. Two, friendship can make you feel guilty about delegating tasks. It’s important to have a friendly atmosphere at work, but remember that you don’t need to please everyone because you’re already a charmer even if you don’t take a cigarette break with them.
