In order to operate, all business need to secure a license from the government and these can come in different types. Just to be sure, it’s always best to consult with your local city or state government, chamber of commerce, and even professional groups. They should be willing to help you out.
Approach your local government bureau or agency to see which license or licenses your operation needs and the requirements to get these. Most (if not all, depending on the locality) are also required to apply for the business name and secure tax certification prior to obtaining licenses. Remember that in some places like the US, you have to go through several levels – city, county, state, and federal.
Depending on your nature of operation, you might have to secure specialized licenses, clearances, and permits like health and sanitation permits, license to sell food and liquor, or handle special substances.
If you are running a one-man show, inquire whether you need to acquire any other license other than your professional license. Lawyers and doctors usually just need their professional licenses to operate. However, if you’re dealing with another field that doesn’t have these certifications, you might have to get one from the government.
Most of business licenses need to be renewed yearly (again, depending on where you are located). So be sure to include this in your calendar of activities. You might pay a hefty fine if you operate on an expired one.
