Here are some tips on manners when eating out, whether it’s in a five star restaurant or your friendly town diner.
Remember your manners. It does not only earn your mom good parental points, but it’s also a sign of courtesy not only to the people you are with, but also to the other diners as well.
Be courteous, whether to the girl behind the counter or the waiting staff who serves your table. If you have a problem with the food, do not raise your voice and demand. Be cool and ask for the manager if there is anyway that the food can be fixed. Try to understand that slips may occur and you were just unlucky enough to be at the receiving end of it. There is nothing that can be resolved through a level-headed, cool-tempered discussion.
Try not to re-arrange the seating. The tables are arranged like so for a reason- and that is for service efficiency. If you’re dining with a large party, then ask if there is anyway you can be accomodated. The best way to deal with this is to call beforehand so a table for you can be reserved.
Unless, you plan to order a number of food and drinks continuously, or if it’s a slow night for customers, avoid lingering. Restaurants are business establishments after-all. Try not to attract the irk of the manager and leave the premises as soon as possible. Relocate to a cafe or somewhere else where you can stay as long as you want.
Turn your cellphone to silent mode. Go out or step to somewhere more private if you need to answer a call. I’m sure other people wouldn’t want to listen to your conversations no matter how interesting they may be.
Tip. The waiting staff are paid below to minimum wages and rely on tips for extra. If the service was good, then show your appreciation by tipping correctly, if not generously. Besides, these people are good at remembering people. You’ll never know what you’ll be in for if you ever return.
