You never thought you’d be so lucky to find the person you’re going to share your whole life with. Everything is perfect, the wedding was grand, and everyone agrees that you two are made for each other…that is, before you discover s/he snores. Is snoring really so bad? Well aside from the fact that it’s literally disturbing, other people consider it as a big turn-off because it can be scary if it’s too loud. And you should be a bit alarmed too. Excessive snoring can mean an underlying medical condition.
When you snore, it means something is blocking your air passages. The blockage should be removed so that your snoring will be stopped or at least reduced.
Snoring can be caused by these things: obesity, alcohol, smoking, and caffeine. Lose a bit of weight so that you lose some of those fat around the throat area. Smoking weakens your throat so you should really quit this time. And you should reduce your consumption of alcohol and caffeine.
Snoring can also be due to the slipping of the tongue back into the throat. This usually happens when you sleep on your back. A better sleeping position would be sleeping on the side.
Snoring can also be caused by misalignment of the jaws. If snoring caused by this bothers you so much, you can ask your dentist to realign your jaw — to have it lowered to create more space in your throat for more comfortable breathing.
You can also buy one of those throat and nasal sprays. These products lubricate your throat with oils and reduce the swelling of the nasal tissues. This allows less or zero vibration in your air passages.
Definitely, as with any health issues that we tackle, it’s always best to discuss your problems with your doctors. There are a lot of reasons why you snore and there are medical methods to properly identify and address them.
