Apart from that you could try to get the party organizers to arrange something fun and participatory rather than just eating and boozing.

I would always recommend a quiz to kick off a staff party. Put people into teams and ask them questions for prizes. It works because people who would usually rather not talk to each other now have a reason to talk.
