Being the boss is the toughest job in the office. Yes, you rake in the largest number, yet the responsibilities are twice as great. You get credits for all successful projects, but you also get the criticism for all failures. Just like a regular employee, you also live through your work by taking the good with the bad.
Every boss cares for his resources - everything that makes his work easier. And more reliable to him than his computer are his employees. So keep your best employees in your team by being the best boss!
You want employees who will be passionate about their work. This requires you to be the epitome of an honest worker. Being the boss gives you the excuse to just warm your chair every office day but that attitude is contagious especially if it starts with you. If you give an honest day’s work everyday, it will be clear that a lazy employee has no place in your company.
Create a space where they could function. This is tricky but it all depends on the profiles of your workers. Creative people like space and flexibility. If your people are, then give them the space as long as they get to finish the job. Create a semi-flextime (creating a window where they could report to work and start their 8 hours of work) schedule. Remember that productivity is always affected by the work space and their conditions.
Promote employee improvement. Some companies send their competent employees to seminars and trainings. There’s always room for improvement, and there’s always more to learn. Do not let your workforce become stagnant. Let your employees learn new ways and strategies of working more effectively. You’ll benefit more from their newly-acquired competence.
Give out incentives. It’ll cost money, but a good employee is worth more than the salary you give him and you know it. It’s really hard to find an honest employee so if you have one who follows all the company rules, you better shell out. A little incentive is going to help propagate honesty in your work place.
