Sink

While most sinks do have small enough drain covers to prevent larger objects such as watches and the like from getting flushed down the sink, you might have some small enough valuables that can get through those wholes. Stud earrings are probably among the common ones that get lost. But just in case you lose one in the sink, fret not as there’s a very good chance you’d get it back. A simple plumbing exercise and you can retrieve your precious item.

What you need:

  • Wrench
  • Bucket
  • Rubber gloves for protection

What to do:

  • Turn of the tap immediately! Water might wash the item away past the trap.
  • Locate the trap in your plumbing system. Often times this would be directly below the sink. It is often P, U, or S-shaped.
  • Place the bucket under the trap’s drain plug.
  • Depending on the type of plug you have, you might need a wrench. Some drain plugs are nuts that need some wrenching. Some have screw-on caps that you can easily loosen by hand.

    Drain Pipe Trap

  • If you’re a bit queasy about handling sewage, wear rubber gloves.
  • Loosen the drain plug so that water will drain from the trap into the bucket. Hopefully, the item has been trapped and would drain together with the water.
  • Locate the item in the bucket.
  • Screw the drain plug back into place taking care not to overtighten it.
