Before the over-confident gentlemen stand and saunter off, I suggest that they stick their butts to their seats and read on. A bottle of mouthwash (or a box of Tictacs for emergencies) and a well-practiced technique are only two-thirds of the formula to great kissing. The missing third is of course, soft, supple lips. You scoff? Too manly for that statement? Alas, but ladies dislike the feel of rough, dry, and chapped skin grazing their own. And we really don’t want them cringing from us, eh?
So how do you know ‘em smoochers are chapped? Easy. Chapping is caused by lack of moisture from the lips. This results from different causes such as over-exposure to the sun, fluid dehydration, vitamin B deficiency, smoking, or even a history of skin order.
If your lips appear reddish and if they feel dry, tender, and with a twinge of pain then chances are, your lips are dry. In extreme cases, they can even bleed.
It takes about a week to get the lips back to prime condition. If your lips are already chapped, don’t lick them! The constant wetting and drying just robs the skin of moisture all the more. Use alcohol/petroleum-free lip balm constantly. Avoid sun and wind exposure at all costs! Finally, avoid smoking, drinking, and eating spicy and salty foods. Give your lips a chance to heal first.
But of course, the best way to deal with the problem is to prevent it. Take care of your lips by ensuring that your body has enough iron, B vitamins, and fatty acids. Buff your lips with a soft-bristled toothbrush at least twice a week to remove dead skin cells that aid in dryness. Apply lip balm after you shower. There are lip balms available that do not leave sheen on the lips. Your secret is safe with you.
Got fresh breath? Top-notch technique? Soft lips? Now you can pucker up!
