You just got to love being cross-disciplinary. It makes just you so… so MacGyver. Well, the fact of the matter is, you can be able to apply some of the things that you know in one discipline to another. Say for example, your skills in your workplace can be helpful in running your household. While you might say that it’s unfair to compare your home to a cut-throat environment such as your business, there are still aspects where both seem to be synonymous. Here are several business techniques that you can apply to home management.
Meetings. While you don’t have to draft a memo containing an agenda and tack a copy on everyone’s doors, you can still hold huddles just to see where everyone’s at. Try it out during dinner around three times a week. Just open the discussion on what everyone’s busy with and how are they doing. This way, you get a good idea of the direction each and everyone is headed.
Calendar. You missed Junior’s game and failed to pick up Stacey from ballet class. If you’re a mess with your schedules then staple a monthly calendar on the wall where everyone’s free to jot down important events. Post-its (with a color assigned for everyone) on the fridge would do well too.
Carpool. Using your schedule as basis, determine the best ways of transporting people. This way you can save time, effort and gas.
Buying in bulk. Costs can be driven down by keeping an organized shopping list and buying in bulk. Know how much each of the members of a household consumes per item and base your purchases on those computations.
Delegate chores. Have everyone pitch in the housework. Rotate the chores each month. As an incentive you can organize a compensation package for each hour of work that your kids have done. Might not have to be monetary but something like TV-time coupons. Work gets done and everyone’s happy. And you can only wish your business can be dealt with so easily.
