To sleep like a baby… that’s a dream for most of us. Remember when you were a kid and you used to take all those naps on lazy afternoons? It must’ve been a long time since you last experienced something like that, huh? The fact is, as people grow older, their sleep tends to become less satisfactory. Thanks to your merciless college days, your sleep has become on and off ever since. Unfortunately, your sleeping habits are bound to change as you age. And probably not for the better. This is due to the fact that age affects sleep.
In general, people sleep less and worse as they get older. Do you ever wonder why your grandparents are having sleeping problems? Old people who are under medication are bound to have sleeping problems because sleep is affected by the medicines we take.
When you retire you shouldn’t adopt a sedentary lifestyle. Being inactive causes one to have sleeping disorders.
Emotional and psychological cases of anxiety and depression also affect your chance at a good sleep. Grown-ups deal with tragic and emotional events on a regular basis and this is why you may find yourself sleepless on nights when you’ve had a breakup, when there’s trouble at work, or if there’s a family crisis.
The answer to all these sleeping disorders is an improvement in your sleep hygiene. How about cleaning up your room so that it looks more inviting? You should give up the long naps because this disrupts your normal sleeping schedule. You should also be more active so that at the end of the day your body can’t fight the urge to rest. And of course, don’t forget to grab your softest pillow.

1One less thing to look forward to. It’s a real problem that as we age, sleep is less and not as satisfying. Reason being, sleep disturbances (either too much or too little) are associated with significant disease. Recently, the GNIF Brain Blogger reviewed the association between sleep and obesity. We are just unraveling such correlations.
Sincerely,
Shaheen
