Ever seen one of those “amazing” videos of fast food people who spit or do whatever disgusting stuff to food they serve to customers who treat them disgustingly? Of course, this can be unlikely in restaurants but then again, who knows?! The best thing to do to avoid such sickening retribution is to be an exemplary customer by following these guidelines on restaurant etiquette. So that if any problem arises, then it wouldn’t be your fault.
The most important thing to remember is to treat your waiter or waitress kindly. Try to imagine yourself in their shoes – you’ve been standing for three hours (in heels) without even a short break, hustling and bustling from the tables to the kitchen and back, not to mention trying to deal with obnoxious patrons. Get the picture? So try to be respectful and polite. Smile, as it never hurts to be friendly. This ensures faster service and an answering sunny smile from your server.
Avoid snapping your fingers to call your waitress to the table. It’s very rude – much like a malicious and unwanted whistle. Resort to a slight wave instead.
Although customers are usually “always right,” shifting from one table to another without checking with the waitress or maitre d’ is very impolite. Not only do you act like a pompous er… mule, but you also cause confusion with bookings ergo extra work for the waiter or waitress.
Try to be considerate not only to the waiter or waitresses, but also to the other customers as well. Avoid talking loudly to your companion, or even to your cell phone. Drink only to your limits so you avoid getting drunk in the restaurant.
The key here is respect. If you respect the people around you and treat them kindly, then you will surely be treated the same in return.
