Do you have an addiction? When a person greatly enjoys doing something, it can turn into an addiction, like smoking, alcohol drinking, or taking pain relievers. When a thing or an activity already turns into an addiction, it’s hard to drop it.
The compulsion to do something you’re addicted to is definitely strong, but it’s not too strong. It is still true that too much of something is bad for you, so understand how you can win your fight against your addiction. That takes a strong will and an even stronger motivation.
Alcoholism and smoking are probably the most common of all addictions. Some people deny their alcoholism, claiming that they know when to stop when in the end, they had to crawl home. Ditto with smoking. Smokers who are already addicted to it might also claim that their smoking is under control, when the truth is that their ashamed of how many sticks they smoke in a day.
People who are controlled by their addiction need help, although they might refuse any. One thing for sure though, is that nagging does not usually bring positive results. While it is very tempting to nag and badger someone with his bad habits, beware that nagging can even bring rebellious responses, where the person might feel pushed and hurt, rather than empowered.
Be a support system. People who want to quit have to believe they can do it. They need treatment and maybe they need counseling. They need your help.
Find a new addiction, but a good one this time. You can re-focus all that passion towards getting addicted to something or someone who actually gives you only good. Go to spa regularly or be a health buff and follow a strict health program and get addicted to everything healthy. Or, you can devote your passion to a new romance. All that passion and addiction tendencies need not be directed towards the wrong things. It’s all a matter of perspective and a new outlook.
