Make 3D

Well, sorry for those who have been misled by the title. This is not some advanced modeling software that can readily create 3D models from JPEGs. Make 3D a web tool that lets you view 2D images converted to simulate a 3D environment. If you ask me, this is a very interesting imaging algorithm by the guys over at Stanford.

Since you can upload your own images, it’s a treat for those who would love to “be back” to some spots that they’ve visited before. Take a look at this rendering of the walkway at Standford.

What this thing does is that it analyzes the image for depth, and tries to plot a 3D mesh. The interface would then allow you to zoom in and out, tilt and rotate through the rendered image, creating the illusion of immersion into the image. Here’s a geekier explanation.

It uses Adobe Shockwave player so better have one installed before trying to use the service.
