Okay, so for more than a week, we haven’t featured any tech updates here. I’m really disappointed that Firefox 3 will only be released in June. I want to get my mitts on it but I’m quite hesitant to feature the Beta versions. Anyway, here’s another Windows tip for you.
This one is even shorter than what I feature for screencasts so no screencasts for now (Besides, I have a wee bit of a sore throat right now). It’s a quick how-to on removing text from desktop icons and this works for both XP and Vista.
1. Select the icon from which you want to remove text
2. Press F2 to rename
![]()
3. Press Alt + 255 (Enable Num Lock if you’re working on a laptop.) This will replace the text with a space much like putting for HTML (one thing you can’t do with the spacebar).
4. Hit Enter or click on the icon.
![]()
5. To make other icons’ text labels disappear, you must add another space. Thus, for the second icon you press Alt + 255 + 255.

2What about rename —– right click —– Insert Unicode Control Character —– then Left-to-right mark .
then no name or click without aim .

3hey! i have a better idea! the alt+255 adea? well…. not very smart! this is what i did to my icons it’s very very very very simple!
1st step = just right click on the icon then scroll down. find “rename” then just hit “spacebar” only once for the first icon. but when you go to another icon, just repeat 1st step, but hit “spacebar” 2x. then to another icon hit “spacebar” 3x. ect…you’ll get the piont.
its better when you type “Hold Alt+255″

4@Nikolai – Obviously you didn’t try that or else you would’ve haev realized that Windows doesn’t like it very much.

7You have to retype the names again since you’re replacing the names with spaces. If you haven’t done anything else, pressing Ctrl + Z would do.

8If you are on a laptop you have to enable number lock and then use the ‘number pad’ (for me K=5 and I=5).
