Women are biologically gifted with more physical features than men. And there’s this saying that the more parts, the more chances for a breakdown. Not that I’m saying that women are more prone. Man’s stone-age-worthy behavior has put us in a lot of risks too. But with an ever busy lifestyle, many women tend to forget routine check ups to see whether their body is in tip-top health. Here are some routine check-ups that you should have done.
Weight/ Height/ Body mass index –This is to check whether you are underweight or overweight. Many diseases are due to being underweight or overweight.
Blood pressure – Hypertension is a dangerous disease since it has no specific symptoms. They can result to abrupt attacks. So it helps to know your blood pressure to know where you stand.
Eye examination – eye defects are not easy to detect unless you have your eyes checked. This exam is very important because some conditions can cause headaches and even dizziness.
Pap smear – Most women need to start having these tests at around 20, to check for any cellular changes in their cervix. This test helps detect any signs of cancer. It reduced the number of deaths due to cervical cancer ever since it was introduced in the 1940’s.
Breast exam – This is a very easy exam but helps a lot in detecting lumps, or cysts, in the breast that may be signs of breast cancer. You can do it yourself at home and it doesn’t cost anything.
Cholesterol level check – Experts usually require cholesterol level checks not until women are in their 40’s but it is recommended to have the baseline check in your 20’s. High cholesterol increases your risk for a lot of diseases.
Blood sugar test – This test is recommended for people who have more than one risk factor of having diabetes. Some risk factors include being overweight and/or having a family history of the disease.
HIV test – This test is a must for people who have at least one of the risk factors, which include having multiple partners and not using proper contraceptives. Pregnant women should also be tested.
Skin exam – This can be done on your own. Check your entire body for any changes in your skin, such as a new mole, or any new marks. Consult a doctor if you find any, they might be more serious than you think. Or not. Either way, it’s always good to be careful.
