Teamwork

Although everyone should look out for himself (at times), this is not always true in the workplace. Most companies prefer people who can both work alone and are also good team players. Easy for the former, but the latter can be a bit more difficult. So how do you know if you’re a team player?

You are a team player if you offer assistance whenever possible. You do not have a manic glint in the eye when you see a team-mate struggling with something. Instead, you offer your assistance in anyway possible.

You are a team player if you take on tasks that are outside your contractual obligations. Of course, there is a limit to this. But do you think you are the type who sees each task as another opportunity to enhance your skills, or learn new ones?

You are a team player if other people acknowledge you and your contribution to the group. Your peers ask for your advice, or confidence, or your opinion on different issues. This means you are essential to the group and everyone knows it.

You are a team player if other people are ready and willing to help you. They know that you are not stingy with your assistance (or expertise), and they in turn will do anything to return the favor.

You are a team player if you are open to other people’s comments and suggestions even if they seem to be out of whack, or if you are at least willing to compromise so that other members of the team get the chance to try out their ideas.

You are a team player if you boost the morale of your peers. You notice that they smile at you and are generally niec to you because you make them feel the same way – happy and well-received.
